Overcoming Design Overwhelm

My Conceptual One Room Design Service

I’ve gotten a few messages from people in the last little while expressing their need for a service that helps them create a cohesive and well thought out design, especially for those of you embarking on the exciting and somewhat daunting process of new builds right now. It was the feeling of being stuck, you have all of these ideas of your taste and style but how do you make a room come together, what makes a good design? All of you are so savvy because you know it’s not about throwing a bunch of new furniture in a room, it’s more than that.  I crafted this service especially for you!

Design Overwhelm is Real

Product Overload

There is so much product out there in the market, from wallpaper to lighting to furniture. What looks good with what? What makes that cohesive pulled together look that makes a room really stand out? If you have ever been on a shopping trip to a furniture store and just stood there overwhelmed or bought a bunch of new furniture that didn’t really go together then you will know how many decisions and choices there are. My conceptual one room design service is all about sorting through those endless choices and makes pairings and combinations that work.

LAYOUT IS KEY

In my process it starts with a functional layout, I work through this is in a lot of detail in this service.

Going through several iterations to get it just right. In a living room you want good conversational seating. You often hear decorators and designers talk about the ”flow” of a room. It’s one of those designer-y words that just means the optimal way for furniture and lighting to be placed. But it truly is the basis of every good room! Because who wants to be knocking your shins against furniture at 6 am when you wake up for your morning routine because there is not enough room to get around a bed that isn’t placed in the best possible way?!

ADDING IN THE INTEREST

Good rooms have a that tension or moment of interest. If you have ever admired a photo of a beautiful room in a magazine or on Pinterest, what you are seeing is the combination of materials, textures and colours that create that tension or point of interest. This is also done through the combination of lighting choices, furniture and elements like built ins or millwork. Also, my personal philosophy is that every great room should have something old paired with the new. Something time worn and vintage is a perfect foil to all of the new stuff and adds so much character and depth. I’m telling you, it’s all about the combos! A room shouldn’t read flat.

YOUR INSPO

So while I am starting this process by thinking of the layout of the room, I am also thinking about your style and the inspiration images that you share with me. That helps so much in creating my initial concepts, I will also draw from rooms and inspo that I think would be a good direction for your space and I present this as an initial concept for feedback.

THE POWER OF A GOOD MOODBOARD

I love a good moodboard because it conveys so much! In this example I am showing a living room that has great conversational seating, with a beautiful mohair sofa centred around a coffee table with accent chairs on the opposite side. I do this to show style and concept, I will also name the products in my moodboard but I say that this isn’t a shopping list because I want you to use if for so much more than that! It’s a clear direction for you to go and sample products that look like this or are these exact products. I want you to sit in every chair and test it out. It’s also a great way to show types of products that I believe will work without tying you down to a specific product.

3D visuals

This is my fun part of the process, helping you visualize your space in 3D and it’s kind of different than your usual “e design” services. This helps not only you but me to see things and determine the scale of pieces that would work, what colours work well togethers etc.

NOTES

I finish this whole process off with some pretty detailed noted on on how I want you to approach each space. This gives you the confidence to implement the design on your own! You will understand what accessories and art to buy, what furniture combinations will look good. What materials to look out for. Essentially this service is my cure all to your design overwhelm!
