Pinterest versus Reality, when it comes down to designing a beautiful room

If you have ever spent hours late at night saving inspiration photos, you probably know that exact moment when reality sets in. We all have dedicated Pinterest boards chock full of those beautiful, magazine worthy interiors. We obsess over the gorgeous details and quietly let them sit in folders, wondering how to translate all of that fabulous inspiration into real life. Sometimes it is a striking colour combination or pattern play, or we see a gorgeous sofa and wonder where to purchase it.

What is not talked about often is the amount of custom furniture that goes into these spaces. Just as an example, there is a highly pinned image of Kendall Jenner’s mountain home living room featured in Architectural Digest, designed by Heidi Callier. The room is anchored by a large sectional covered in a whimsical Hollyhock chintz by British textile make Lee Jofa, so not exactly something you can pick up off a retail shelf, but oh so dreamy!

How to Translate High End Inspo Into Real Life

How do you translate an unattainable look into something you can actually achieve in your own home? There is, of course, the literal interpretation where you commission a custom piece with a floral chintz. But it is a little designer secret to be able to dissect these photos and extract what drew you to the image in the first place.

I never go for the literal interpretation, because we want your space to feel original and personal. Instead, we iterate and extract the feeling:

Pattern Play: Maybe we add a vintage Persian rug with a subtle floral motif.

Garden Elements: We can lean into the cottage aesthetic using a vintage rattan armchair.

Subtle Accents: Or we introduce the floral motif through thoughtful throw pillows while keeping your main sofa classic, foundational and comfortable, upholstered in a solid fabric.

It is not always the literal copycat that wins the day, but rather the feeling behind it.

My own Pinterest boards with several boards where I save all of my favourite furniture, decor and lighting waiting to be used on my next client project.

Accessible Design Through Smart Sourcing

This is the exact benefit of my virtual interior design services. By mixing vintage elements, whether that is decor or a unique furniture find with foundational, enduring retail pieces, we create a space that feels deeply personal and collected over time.

This approach also makes professional design much more accessible. By allowing you to handle purchasing directly through retail sources, you avoid the hefty markups and complex contracts of traditional full-service firms. Of course, if you fall in love with a bespoke look, I can always provide complete, trade grade specification sheets that you can hand straight to your local workroom!

Spatial Strategy and Scale Precision

When it comes to getting the look right, spatial planning and scale are everything. That is why visualization is one of the most important tools I offer my clients.

A Note From Our Studio:

A client recently came to us feeling completely stuck on her main living area layout. Instead of just putting together flat mood boards, we modeled her exact room in 3D so she could see two different furniture arrangements side by side. Being able to visualize the space in true scale brought so much clarity, and it instantly proved why a sectional was the right fit before she spent a single dollar.

Seeing your room in 3D takes all the guesswork out of shopping, giving you the peace of mind that every piece will feel right at home.

A Clear Blueprint for Execution

You do not need a design team managing freight deliveries and site visits to end up with a gorgeous, refined home. You just need a thoughtful, thorough roadmap that answers all of your layout and material questions upfront.

With architectural floor plans, realistic 3D renderings, and a curated finish schedule, you have everything you need to bring your vision to life at your own pace.
